Giniel De Villiers took over the lead of the Dakar Rally on Thursday after leader and Volkswagen teammate Carlos Sainz dropped out. Sainz missed a sharp turn and his car flipped into a 13-foot ravine during the 12th stage between Fiambala and La Rioja, two days from the finish. Co-driver Michel Perin broke his shoulder and the pair was returned to Fiambala by helicopter.

Dakar Rally leader Carlos Sainz is apparently out of the race after his Volkswagen careened into a ravine during Thursday’s 12th stage. The Dakar Rally Web site reports that the two-time world rally champion abandoned the race, and is not believed to be seriously injured. The Spaniard and French teammate Michel Perin were taken by helicopter to Fiambala, where the stage began.
