Former NASCAR Rookie of the Year Sam McQuagg dies (AP)

Sam McQuagg, the 1965 NASCAR Rookie of the Year, died Saturday, his son said. He was 73. McQuagg died at St. Francis Hospital, Sam McQuagg Jr. told The Associated Press. Preliminary medical reports show McQuagg died from cancer. McQuagg began racing in the 1950s and entered his first NASCAR race in 1962. His son remembered his father’s racing career as something that seemed normal to McQuagg Jr.

Todd Bodine tops bobsled qualifying (AP)

Qatar’s Al Attiyah wins 1st stage of Dakar Rally (AP)

Qatar’s Nasser Al Attiyah won the first stage of the Dakar Rally on Saturday, a 231-mile dusty run in which he held off a posse of Volkswagens led by former world champion Carlos Sainz. Al Attiyah, winner of the UAE Desert Challenge, completed the leg in his BMW from Buenos Aires south to Santa Rosa in 2 hours, 36 minutes, 15 seconds.

Past is prologue? Busch may be even better in 2009

Admittedly, the collapse of Kyle Busch’s No. 18 Joe Gibbs Racing Toyota team in the Chase tainted an otherwise phenomenal season in which Busch won eight of the first 22 Cup races in his first year with JGR.
